On November 3rd, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Karnali District in Western Nepal. Many people died, there were many casualties, 7166 houses were severely damaged, 35.000 households were left homeless, and 16570 dwellings were completely destroyed.
This earthquake, 500 kilometers west of Kathmandu, was felt in New Delhi, Kathmandu, and Lumbini.
On November 10, several messages reached our NGO, and we decided to help jointly with our Dutch partner organization, Stichting Project Nepal. We held many meetings, and on November 13, our fieldworker Yogesh traveled to the Karnali District to investigate what we, as a small group, might do.
On November 17 and 18, we met with numerous members of the local government. Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are prepared to assist a village or ward based on their capacity.
We decided to provide € 12,000 with our Dutch partner Stichting Project Nepal in order to build 30 temporary dwellings for Dalit households in Jajarkot. All materials can eventually be used to build permanent homes.
The cost includes wages, building materials, and food for field workers and masons in Jajarkot.
On November 27th, Jogesh and our sub-engineer returned to Jajarkot, and on November 28th, they met with all of the locals who are prepared to help with the building.
Construction began on November 30 and ended on December 28 with the completion of all 30 temporary dwellings.
